"The Leprosy Mission has done immensely good work by giving us an opportunity, training us free of cost, thus dignifying our not-so-respectable life. I hail them in high esteem and appreciate their commendable work" Panomi Hansda, 2024

Isolation was something Panmoni knew all too well. Developing leprosy in her childhood, she was struck with self-stigma, affecting her participation in family, social and school life. Adding to these challenges, she lost her farther at a young age.

Panmoni took MDT irregularly, meaning she was not cured of leprosy for most of her life. Her hands began to claw. In 2010, after completing a full course of MDT, she was cured.

Initially, Panmoni was a daily labourer. TLM Vocational Training Centre (VCT) Bankura staff conducted pre-admission counselling session in Saranga Bankura, where Panmoni was identified as an eligible candidate for TLM VCT training.

Cutting and sewing was the course she chose to pursue, providing her with the skills needed to sew trousers, gowns and dresses, chudidaar (fitted trousers), leggings and bed linen. Her knowledge grew and she developed a wide range of skills needed for the garment industry. She found her first sewing technician role at Deuki Hosiery, based in Kolkata. Since then, she has found employment in Shivkripamay Apparel Ltd, which means her salary increased.

Panmoni’s current role allows her to send money to her mother. She is also able to save, has rebuilt her home and now lives independently.

Panmoni has always been a softly spoken person, in the early part of her training she struggled to talk to other. Isolation meant keeping to herself and making friends was not easy. She often had different opinions and adjusting to social environments was a challenge. After her training and entering consistent employment, Panmoni feels that she has grown, her helping nature has flourished and she enjoys participating in activities as well as conversations. Her confidence has never been so high.
