Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, TLM supports the Ethiopian National Association of Ex-Leprosy Patients, ENAELP.

The organisation's vision is to see a stigma-free society, where isolation and discrimination are eliminated. They work to ensure people affected by leprosy and their families are fully integrated into society. A common goal is to see all members live in dignity, free from poverty, and participate in the economic social and political life of Ethiopia.

Thousands of Ethiopian people suffer from the stigma of leprosy with devastating socio-economic results. These people are usually the poorest of the poor, and are often socially excluded.

Africa - Ethiopia Through ENAELP’s efforts, World Leprosy Day has been celebrated in Ethiopia since 2000. This is an annual event held on the last Sunday in January to raise public awareness about leprosy.

ENAELP has also advocated for people affected by leprosy to be included in the
Federation of Persons with Disabilities and since 1999 people disabled by leprosy have participated in the annual sporting Festival of the Disabled Persons. (See photo below).

TLM also supports the All Africa Leprosy, TB and Rehabilitation Training Centre in Addis Ababa, ALERT. Health workers from all over Africa come to ALERT to be trained in detecting and treating leprosy.
